3. From More on Journalism, choose a Journalism Tutorial, a One-Minute Tutorial, or a Bite-Sized Tutorial, read it, and write a paraphrase the information in a short paragraph.
4. Starting with a good idea is crucial to a reporter’s success. However, they must first research the idea/topic. Next, it is crucial to consider who to interview, and what to ask them. However, reporting an interview, or such new news it is mandatory that each person have a granted license. Finally, in order to be a successful reporter, one must know how to collect tid-bits of information, be active, and store information properly.
5. In Even More about Journalism, read the article about Peter Cole. What does he say is the difference between journalistic writing and creative writing? He says that journalists refer to their writing as stories. Why? Consider the best storytellers. What do they have in common?
Your task: Interview a classmate about storytelling. Ask and then write the answers to the following: Think about a time when someone told you a great story/anecdote/report. Ask the classmate to retell the story. Who told it? What made it great? Why did it keep your attention? Was it short or long? Does length make a difference? What about word choice? Would the story be different if it were in written form? What would change? Describe the author’s voice (Not the audible sound a person makes. Voice has to do with style). The difference between creative writing and journalistic writing is that journalistic writing is finding information out, and telling it to people in a clear and concise manager, while creative writing is more engaging, and requires more intellectual thought and understanding. They refer to their reports as stories because of the amount of time and effort that they invest into each article. All story tellers have the ability to captivate the audience. My dad once told me of how to snipe hunt. In doing so, he tricked people into hunting birds. Instead of hunting, they would leave the individual in the woods by themselves. The story of leaving his friend in the woods was great. It kept my attention because it was hilarious. It was just the right length, yet it was longer. The word choice by my father was perfect. The length does not make a difference. I would not change anything in this article.
